About Liposuction
Origin and Development in Liposuction
The liposuction is a surgery which has its origin in dermatology.
Liposuction can improve your Body-Mass-Index (BMI) and waist circumference. It is a method to shape the body contours. Dermatology is a part of the human medicine which has its specification in skin and hypodermic tissue. The dermatologists are the ones which formed the state of the art in liposuction.
The first liposuctions were done by two physicians in Rome 30 years ago. The safety of these surgeries was not very high. The American dermatologist Jeffrey Klein was the first which used the technique of tumescence. Infusions of large amounts of physiological salt solution enhanced the safety of liposuction. Later he introduced the local-anesthesia in tumescence solution. These developments established a high standard and reduced most risks in the liposculpture suction surgery.
The Department of Dermatology at the University Tulane, USA was the first one which introduced liposuction in postgraduate education for dermatologists in 1987.
The German dermatologist, Doctor Gerhard Sattler leads in the postgraduate training in liposuction in Germany. It was a pleasure for me to be part of his first training in liposuction in 1997. Since that I systematically participate in congresses and symposia organized by Doctor Sattler. It is part of my development in the professional life.
The Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) known as vibrating cannula was firstly used in the late 90s. It is a very important development in the liposuction. This medical instrument is standing for the safety and precision in surgery.
We update continuously our know-how and our equipment. For years we are using tumecent liposuction with a vibrating cannula, which is called Power Assisted Liposuction technique (PAL). Recently we use additionally also a new technique called laser assisted technique. SmartLipo is a laser system that can be applied to enhance the liposuction. SmartLipo was approved in 2006 by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This is at the moment the most advanced technique for liposuction. Literature data indicates that through this laser system, surgery can be more smooth and the recovery time shorter. Our experiences with this system are very good. We use the technique since January 2008 in our Clinic.
Anesthesia: We perform liposuction in tumescent-local-anesthesia.
Surgical Time course and Recovery:
The procedure is a 4 hours long outpatient treatment. You need 1 week vacation for recovery.
Limitations: We recommend reduced physical activity up to 3-6 weeks after the surgery (for example no gym).
Special risks of liposuctions are: asymmetry, uneven skin, keloids, bruises and others. These risks are to be discussed by a clearing consultation before the surgery.
Clearing Up and Examinations:
During the consultation before the surgery, your doctor describes the procedure and what results might realistically be expected. At least one week before the surgery a physical examination, blood work and ECG are to be conducted. Further information see on the page Important Notes before Liposuction.
Follow-up check: We perform check-ups the first and the 7th day after the surgery. Further check-ups after one, three and six months after the treatment are beneficial.
For further details see our page Important Notes after Liposuction.
Important: Please avoid sauna, tanning bed and sun exposure for 4-6 weeks after the surgery.
Most Common Body Areas for Liposuction:
The most popular body areas for liposuction are the stomach and sides, inner and outer thighs, hips, upper arms, chin and breast.
